Raise a paw!

Gaius's Contest rocks. I love causes! We all talked it over and I said I'd raise a paw for Snap who will raise a (wet) hoof for....Canter USA. Like Siamese Rescue there are lots of independent smaller Canters across the country. This organization helps trainers sell ex-race horses who aren't doing so well at the track to people who want to rescue them. These volunteers go to the Shedrows and take pictures of horses and post them on their websites and assist people in meeting the horses. Its unique because the racing industry is involved and behind the whole process. From their website:

Through its Web site, CANTER provides the means for the public to view what horses are ending their racing careers and are available for purchase or adoption at Thoroughbred racetracks in six states. CANTER volunteers walk the shedrows of the racetracks taking listings and photographs for posting to the Web site. At most of our affiliates, the trainers may donate or sell their horse to CANTER and the organization will find approved non-race homes for their horses.

CANTER helps so many horses get a second chance at a new life! Snap didn't find a home through CANTER because the track where she raced does not have a CANTER associated with it. I know this is rather unpleasant but many ex-race horses who do not find non-racing homes end up at slaughter houses and many of the prices of these horses are barely above what the "meat man" would pay for them. There is an anti-slaughter bill now but its all rather controversial and I'm a cat so I'm not getting involved.

I just want to say bravo to the beans at CANTER!

Man Cat Monday

I'm back! Whew, what a boring week for me. The Woman has made her horse related decisions yet is still all uptight because she has to give someone some hard news tomorrow so she could use a few purrs if you could spare them. She is very nervous about a conversation she has to have this evening.

What's new with me? Well I had to supervise the laundry because the Woman likes to strip all of my fur from everything. The Awesome Man and the Woman spent a half an hour brushing me on Sunday and found that I just can't stop shedding. Apparently I have enough fur to make Kaze & Latte together. Other than that, I hung with the charmers and just took lots of naps. I'm glad to be back!

Wanna see a baby horse?

IMAGE REMOVED DUE TO HOT LINKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This little foal was born just 3 days before this picture was taken. You can see where his mom (a maiden mare which means he is her first baby) stepped on him by accident. This little guy had a really hard time standing up on his own but the wonderful woman who takes care of our horse, Snap, took care of the little guy even though he wasn't her responsibility. He's doing well now! Thanks to the nice woman who gave them HER hay and HER water and tons of time. The mean mean owners of this mare (there are 20 PREGNANT mares out in a field and they were out there all Winter) said that the nice woman was trying to hurt the baby horse. Grrrr.....race track people are BAD mean people who don't care about the horses. There is another really really really sad chapter to this story but I don't want to upset anyone so I'm not going to tell it. Lets just say the poor pregnant mares need to come inside.
